This Heritage Day, step aboard a piece of South African railway history. Atlantic Rail invites you to experience the magic of steam-hauled passenger travel along the spectacular coastal route between Hartenbos and Mossel Bay (Santos Beach).

On Thursday, 24 September, families, railway enthusiasts and heritage lovers can experience a journey back to the golden age of South African rail travel, with three departures at 09:00, 12:00 and 15:00.

The Star of the Show: “SYLVIA”

Leading the journey is the magnificent SAR Class 19B No. 1412, “SYLVIA.” Built in 1930, this 96-year-old steam locomotive is a remarkable piece of South African railway heritage still proudly operating today.

Hear the whistle, feel the power of steam and experience the unmistakable rhythm of the rails as Sylvia makes her way along the beautiful Garden Route coastline.

What to Expect

Century-Old Coaches:
Travel in beautifully restored vintage passenger coaches, each with more than 100 years of history behind them.

Spectacular Coastal Views:
Experience the journey between Hartenbos and Santos Beach from a completely different perspective as the railway follows the coastline.

The Magic of Steam:
Hear the rhythmic chuff of the locomotive, see clouds of steam and smoke against the coastal backdrop, and experience railway travel from another era.

History in Motion:
Bring your camera! From Sylvia herself to the vintage coaches and coastal scenery, there will be plenty of opportunities to capture a very special piece of South African railway history.
